Client’s Request:
When a new group of expats arrived to the area, the Stockholm International School hired Colorado Corporate Escapes (Formally Skal Celebrations) asking for an activity that would introduce the new arrivals to other expat couples. The goal was to find an interesting and fun way for everyone to meet and connect with one another.
Results:
As the result of conversations with our client, we decided the sport of curling would accomplish the goal. Most people have not had the opportunity to try curling so it would be a new experience for everyone involved. We contacted the Danderyd Curling Club and found a sponsor for the event who donated prizes. Then, we hired an instructor to teach the group how to play. After several matches were completed, we arranged for the group to gather for pizza and prizes. During an ending award ceremony, everyone was able to connect on a deeper level in a celebratory atmosphere.

Client’s Request:
Valentine’s Day was fast approaching. Our Stockholm-based client wanted to send parcels home to colleagues in their U.S.-based offices. They wanted to send something unique and delicious that could only be found in Sweden and didn’t cost a fortune. The client asked for a team-building exercise where his team would make something unique and delicious that could then be mailed to their colleagues in the United States.
Results:
Colorado Corporate Escapes (Formally Skål) organized a tour of the Gamla Stan Polkagriskokeri candy shop in the heart of the Old Town of Stockholm. The shop sells nothing but old-fashioned candy canes and hard candies in all sorts of flavors from classic peppermint to berry-flavored and licorice ones. The highlight of the shop is its workshop, where, behind a pane of glass, the staff hand-rolls and hand-cuts the candy canes as shoppers watch the process.
After the tour, Skål arranged for the group to learn how to make their very own Swedish candy canes. Everyone brought the candies they made back to the office so our client was able to send the packages off to colleagues in the USA. Team members had fun connecting with one another while doing something fun for their colleagues in the U.S.
In addition, the Swedes are very rule-abiding citizens and rarely bend to make exceptions or favors for anyone. While negotiating a rate for this tour and the lesson, Skål was able to convince the owner to give the group a 20% discount on any purchases they made on that day. Therefore, everyone also stocked up for Valentine’s Day!

Client’s Request:
March brings dreary weather to Sweden. So when March rolls around, many expats living in Sweden are homesick. They’ve been away from the US for more than a year or two, are tired of the same old “Swedish” meat and potato dishes, and are hungry for hamburgers and fries – something truly American! Our client asked us to create a team building event that would bring a taste of the USA to Sweden.
Results:
Colorado Corporate Escapes organized an American dinner at O’ Leary’s Pub which included trivia and karaoke. Early on we spent time getting acquainted with our client and quickly learned that they enjoyed being challenged. Therefore, we created a trivia game so that attendees could be divided into teams. Skål found sponsors who donated wine and a variety of liquor as prizes for the winning trivia team. Then, to add an addition element of fun, those in attendance participated in karaoke. The spirit of competition with both trivia and karaoke created an uplifting evening of team building while delivering a taste of the USA in Sweden.

Client’s Request:
Mothers from the Stockholm International School (SIS) come from different countries and cultures. Many of them felt sad and lost having left everything behind to go live abroad. Therefore, the School was unsure how to help them bond and create everlasting friendships. Skål was asked to design a team building event that would achieve the goal of developing a sense of community among these women.
Results:
Colorado Corporate Escapes booked a room at SIS and set it up for a fun painting session. We arranged for a Swedish artist to teach the group how to paint the traditional Swedish Dala Horse. Though she was not fluent in English, the artist demonstrated each technique step-by-step so the women could paint these traditional wooden horses. The women were randomly divided into groups where they could easily paint, talk, laugh, and share stories.
We also asked each person to bring a small dish from their home country that they could share with the group. Each woman was happy to introduce their dish to their new friends. While they let the paint dry on their Dala Horses, they snacked on the tasty treats that everyone had contributed.
Skål set up a FiKA for the women. FiKA in Swedish means ‘coffee and cake break’ – making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat. It is also a state of mind or an attitude. The women felt at ease in this setting and quickly bonded so the client’s goal was achieved.
